Mary Hoskins was born in Slovakia, but moved to the USA with her family 18 months later. She graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago with a degree in Graphic Design. While working in the advertising field Mary started to apply her graphics background to mosaic art.
Mary's biggest influences are the wonderful art and artists surrounding her. She loves the strong color and great textures of glass, saying "I mostly blame the glass...it's my weakness."
Her artistic process begins with a thought in her head. She usually has the pieces complete in her mind before she ever begins manipulating the glass. Other times she begins with a drawing, or she lets the color of the glass determine the appearance of the end product.
Mary says "I love
taking something that's cold and hard and turning it into something that looks organic."
