Luz Maria Castillo

Luz Maria Castillo is an artist from Chicago who has spent time working with a variety of mediums. Castillo is involved with Cocomocha Studio, a community driven arts studio (along with fellow featured artist, Derric Clemens) which features a large selection of art wear clothing and jewelry. She cites the works of surrealist artist Magritte, whose paintings "question time and space and reality" as an influence, as well as "the strange and emotional world of artist Frida Kahlo."

After her experiences collaborating with public art installations in 2007 with the Cool Globes organization, Castillo became more sensitive to the environment and more interested in nature. Her awareness of how technology has changed our modern lives increased. Her three-dimensional furniture pieces featured in our show reflect her preoccupation with the digitizing of our daily lives and how it has challenged the beauty and importance of our natural world. In her own words, "The tables are purposefully fun objects that seem to walk forward from nature right into the oversaturated electronic world of a modern age."
